About Fons Fidei
Why "Fons Fidei"?
Fons Fidei is Latin for "Fountain of Faith." The name is drawn from one of the most striking images in all of Scripture: the moment when the soldier's lance pierced the side of Christ on the Cross, and at once there came out blood and water (John 19:34). The Church Fathers have always seen in that blood and water the birth of the sacraments — Baptism and the Eucharist — and with them, the birth of the Church herself.
The Faith, then, is not something static or dusty. It is a fountain — inexhaustible, life-giving, flowing from the very heart of God made man. This site takes its name from that reality. Everything here is an attempt to draw from that fountain: to understand what the Church teaches, to trace those teachings back to their source in Scripture and Tradition, and to present them with the clarity and reverence they deserve.
About the Author
My name is Joseph Halbrook. I am a Catholic layman, and I started Fons Fidei because I kept encountering the same questions — from friends, from family members, from colleagues, and, honestly, from myself. Why do Catholics believe that? Where does this teaching come from? How do you answer that objection?
I found that the answers were almost always there in the Church's own treasury — in the Catechism, in the Fathers, in the Councils, in the lives of the saints — but they were not always easy to find or easy to explain in ordinary language. Fons Fidei is my attempt to bridge that gap: to take the deep things of the Faith and present them in a way that is accessible, honest, and grounded in the sources.
I am not a priest or a theologian. I am a layman who loves the Faith, reads widely, and believes that every Catholic ought to be able to give a reason for the hope that is in them (1 Peter 3:15). That is what this site is for.
